Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be an AMC member in order to go on a trip?

No. Many people "try out" the AMC first by going to some events and join soon after.

How can I find out about hikes and backpacks and can you send me a list?

A complete listing of activities and programs is published ten times a year in the AMC Outdoors Magazine, and is one of many member benefits. You can also sign up for our monthly trip and activity email listing called HB Announce .

What other activities does AMC sponsor aside from hiking?

Rock climbing, ice climbing, canoeing, kayaking, road & mountain biking, alpine & cross-country skiing, wind surfing, family outings, local walks, trail maintenance, city youth-group training, camps, White Mountain Huts, classes & workshops, international excursions, environmental research and much more.

Isn't everything in the AMC "hard-core"?

You'll find plenty of moderate excursions like local walks in suburban conservation land and frequent beginnner level dayhikes and backpacks all over New England.

What is the age range of people in the AMC?

All ages! Hiking is a sport that can be enjoyed by all...from teens to people well into their 80's!

Is it true that you have to be sponsored in order to become a member?

That policy is long gone. We now have completely open membership...all you have to do is send in your membership form.

How do I join the AMC?

  • Call 617-523-0636
  • Or write:
AMC, Membership Department, 5 Joy Street, Boston, MA 02108
  • Or join online!

When was the AMC founded?

The Club was founded in 1876 by a group of Harvard College students with the goal of exploring and studying the mountains of New England. That makes the AMC the oldest conservation and outdoor recreation organization in the U.S.

Isn't hiking and backpacking expensive?

No -- or at least it shouldn't be. While it's always possible to go max out your Visa on a lot of hi-tech gear and clothing, there are a good many less-expensive (and even down-right cheap) alternatives out there.
