Map and Compass Workshop

mapcompass.gif Even experienced hikers lose the trail now and then. But knowing how to navigate with map and compass can make the occasional, unintended wanderings less threatening and get you back on track. Classroom training as well as actual practice in the field will give you the foundation for travelling with confidence in the woods, intentionally (orienteering or bushwacking) or unintentionally (oops, I'm lost!).

Each September, the Boston Chapter Hiking/Backpacking Committee teaches basic Map and Compass skills for off-trail navigation, including intentional bushwacking and emergency route finding. No off-trail experience necessary. A checklist of what to bring and wear is provided upon signup. Cost for 2008 was $65, includes food and lodging at Harvard Cabin (near Pinkham Notch, NH) and instructional materials for a 2-day weekend.

Boston Chapter H/B leaders and co-leaders may apply for training reimbursment.
