Winter Hiking & Backpacking Program 2008-2009

The hiking season doesn't end after the last of the fall foliage is gone, it enters a whole new wonderful season! If you're an experienced, three-season hiker who doesn't want to hibernate all winter, come join us for the Hiking & Backpacking Committee's Winter Hiking Program!

This course offers five interactive Tuesday evening sessions, including demonstrations and Q&A's in small groups with Boston Chapter trip leaders, numerous day trips, weekend trips, and plenty opportunities to try out winter hiking and backpacking equipment.

Registration for the 5-session class is full! If you are an experienced winter hiker and wish to register for Session 5: Getting Ready to Camp in the Snow, please see below for more info.


Session Dates

  • Session 1: Tue., Nov. 18
  • Session 2: Tue., Nov. 25
  • Session 3: Tue., Dec. 2
  • Session 4: Tue., Dec. 9
  • Session 5: Tue., Dec. 16
  • Cardigan Weekend Workshop: Jan. 23-25, 2008. (Trip Fee: $95)

Topics include

  • Getting Ready at Home (heat management and clothing, footwear, and day packs)
  • Getting Ready for the Trail (physical conditioning, and energy management and nutrition)
  • Getting on the Trail (winter travel and snowshoes, above-treeline travel, non-technical use of ice ax and crampons, and winter navigation)
  • Getting Ready Just in Case (winter weather, winter safety and cold weather injury prevention)
  • Getting Ready to Camp in Snow (backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, foam pads, camping techniques, stoves and food preparation)

 

Hiking Trips

To learn and practice skills in the field, this program includes a wide range of free day trips and low cost weekend trips, as well as winter camping and backpacking opportunities. Particularly recommended is the  popular Cardigan Weekend Workshop, held at the AMC's Cardigan Lodge near Bristol, NH on January 23-25, 2009. The 2 day trip offers several hikes per day for all abilities, home-cooked breakfasts and dinner, as well as hands-on winter hiking instruction. Trip Cost is $95, payable during the program classes.

Session Locations

  • Sessions 1-4 take place from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM at the AMC Cabot Auditorium, 4 Joy Street, Boston (click for map).
  • Session 5 takes place from 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM at Joe Jones Wilderness House, 1048 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. (click for map).


Winter Camping Session
Experienced winter hikers who want to expand their expertise to winter overnights may register for the Winter Camping Session (Session 5: Getting Ready to Camp in the Snow) on Dec. 16 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. at Joe Jones Wilderness House. The cost for this single session is $20 for AMC members, $25 for non-members. (Not a AMC member? Join today and save 20% on membership rates.) For those enrolled in this year's full Winter Hiking and Backpacking Program, Session 5 is included and no additional payment is required.
